Miner's Green Team and the garden program are pleased to present Miner's September garden newsletter. We are so happy to welcome FoodCorps servicemember Syndey Lawson to Miner.
All families are welcome to stop by the Peace Garden anytime they're at Miner when the building is open. On Saturday, August 29, the Miner Mutual Aid Network held its second Community Table event. Thanks to the support of the Miner community, Serve Your City and the Ward 6 Mutual Aid Network, and the Miner Administration, the event provided:
In addition, the Miner Equity Team’s Return to Learning and Solidarity Committees were on hand to provide additional support and resources. The Mutual Aid team wishes to thank everyone who contributed to the event, especially our outstanding volunteers. We also wish to thank Christ City Church for their incredible support of the Miner Community. As a reminder, if you need support or have support to give, please fill out the Mutual Aid Network intake form. A date for next month’s Community Table will be announced soon. If you are interested in donating, please email [email protected]. Thank you so much to everyone who joined us on August 15 for Miner’s March for Black Lives Matter. The turnout was amazing and we are so grateful to the support we received from our community!
None of this would have been possible without the hard work of Latoya McCarthy-Scott and the Equity Team’s Solidarity Committee. They organized a great event for families and even provided supplies to make some of the amazing signs and banners. And somehow they even arranged for the rain to hold off until the very end! Attached are some photos of the march. Thanks to all who participated! The Miner Mutual Aid Network is once again partnering with Serve Your City and Ward 6 Mutual Aid to provide non-perishable food boxes, masks and other PPE, household items, and children’s books and toys. In addition, as we prepare for distance learning we will have school supplies, including a limited number of devices, and a table set up for distance learning support. This event is open to the entire Miner community and we encourage everyone to come out and support each other. Masks and social distancing will be required. Donations: If you received an EBT card and would like to use it to buy food to be donated to the event, please see the below list of items. Donations can be dropped off at Miner between 12 noon and 1:00 PM Thursday 8/27 or Friday 8/28.

The Miner Equity Team's Solidarity Committee invites the Miner family and community to make signs and march from Miner to Rosedale Community Center in a peaceful protest against police brutality and the systemic oppression of Black people in America. This is the perfect opportunity for our children to be a part of something that isn’t just a moment.
Need poster supplies? They will be available for contactless pick up at Miner August 10–14 from 10AM to 2PM. Important: please wear a facemask and adhere to social distancing guidelines.
On Saturday, July 25 the Miner Mutual Aid Network will host a Community Table and Support event in the Miner parking lot from 11:00am to 2:00pm. The Miner Mutual Aid Network will provide non-perishable food boxes; masks, gloves and other safety supplies; household items; and school supplies. All members of the Miner community are welcome to attend. Mutual Aid is solidarity. This is our opportunity to come together as a community and support one another. The event is not restricted to Miner families or teachers, all members of the greater Rosedale/Kingman Park neighborhoods are welcome. Social distancing guidelines will be in place. Drive-up will be available. Children’s book and toy swap
The community table will feature a children’s book and toy swap. If you have books and toys that are no longer needed but are in good condition, we encourage you to bring them by for inclusion in a book and toy swap. Please disinfect your items before bringing to the event. Volunteers Needed The Mutual Aid Network is looking for volunteers to assist with the event. Click here to sign up for a time slot. Donations Needed If you have access to bulk household items or cleaning supplies, please contact the Miner Mutual Aid Network using the following email: [email protected]. Employment Referral It has become clear that a pressing need facing many in our community is employment. The Miner Mutual Aid Network has created a simple form for anyone with insight into businesses that are hiring. We envision maintaining a list of job openings to refer folks to as they seek employment. We invite you to view the form and add any opportunities you are aware of. Dear Miner Community, It is with great pleasure I write to you to inform you of a new Assistant Principal joining our school community! We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Antwan Lee to the Miner Family. Mr. Lee is joining us from Johnson Middle School where he served as an assistant principal since 2016. Before his time as an assistant principal at Johnson MS he also served as an assistant principal in the charter sector and both a general education and special education mathematics teacher. Mr. Lee received his undergraduate degree in psychology from North Carolina State University, his master’s in special education at North Carolina Central University, and a certificate in Executive Leadership from Georgetown University. Mr. Lee bring a wealth of knowledge and passion to the Miner Elementary School community. We are thrilled to have him joining the Miner Family. Mr. Lee and I will be hosting a join virtual ‘meet and greet’ later this summer. We will share details as they become available. Please join me in welcoming him to the team. Respectfully, Bruce W. Jackson Principal Hello Miner Families,
Happy St. Patrick's Day! I hope that everyone is doing well and getting some quality family time. I wanted to write a quick update for everyone - and will plan to continue communicating at least weekly, if not more. Spring Break - Teachers and students officially begin Spring Break today through next Monday (March 23rd). During this time, teachers are also off and not expected to be working. During this time, if you have anything school related that you need, please feel free to email AP Townsend ([email protected]) and Principal Jackson ([email protected]). At least one of us will be working each day during Spring Break to assist with anything that you need. Work Packets - Members of the Miner staff worked to prepare packets that were sent home for every student who was at school on last Friday. In addition, DCPS's Office of Teaching and Learning has prepared Distance Learning Packets for students beginning on March 25th. These packets will be available online but can also be picked up in person at Miner on the following dates/times:
Following the listed pick up dates, DCPS will CLOSE schools, at which point all employees (including administrators) will be teleworking. Teacher's Office Hours - Beginning on Tuesday, March 24th, all teachers and staff will have office hours while they telework so that students and families can reach out for assistance with their Distance Learning Packets. Some teachers will even attempt to deliver new content via blended learning platforms. Teachers will reach out via class dojo, email, or text message to inform you of their hours. I will also post them on Class Dojo for all K-5 teachers. If you need additional assistance or are unable to reach your child's teacher during Distance Learning, please feel free to reach out to AP Townsend ([email protected]) and Principal Jackson ([email protected]) and we will be happy to assist. I hope everyone enjoys Spring Break! Respectfully, Principal Jackson Visit to the Future Miner fifth-graders took a step into the future on Feb. 11 when they visited Eliot-Hine Middle School for Buddy Day. This was no typical open house. The fifth-graders got to team up with upperclassmen on an International Baccalaureate engineering project, visit the art studio and the design-and-modeling classrooms, speak to a student panel, and meet Principal Marlene Magrino. Fifth-graders from Miner Elementary pose with students at Eliot-Hine Middle School during Buddy Day in February. Miner is a feeder school for Eliot-Hine. Miner Elementary and Eliot-Hine Middle School students collaborate on an IB engineering project during Buddy Day at the middle school on Feb. 11. Spring Celebration The PTO’s annual Yard Sale will be March 21, featuring great deals on games, toys, books, clothing, household items, and more. Volunteers will collect hazardous household waste like paints and oils and recycle used electronics and batteries. Also on that day, Miner will welcome D.C. Councilmember Charles Allen for a ribbon cutting of the new playground and sports fields, which will be open to the public for a springtime play date. A Real Growth Period Miner has formed a Green Team to lead its garden-related programming and to manage the school’s two recently renovated gardens: a large vegetable plot known as the Peace Garden and a smaller ECE pollinator patch known as the Discovery Garden. The Peace Garden will be replanted this spring after a long closure during Miner’s new playground construction. The Green Team will host community work days in March and April as well as a garden play date to celebrate the Peace Garden’s official reopening. It will feature tables, benches, an irrigation system, and composters acquired through a $35,000 grant from the Office of the State Superintendent of Education, which has established and strengthened MIner’s garden programming over the past two years. Additionally, Miner is partnering with FoodCorps to have a full-time servicemember visit K–5 classrooms weekly to provide garden-related instruction and hands-on experiences. Miner also has a popular Garden Club open to K–2 students. Yes to the Dress—and the Suit Miner is collecting formalwear and dressy clothes, including shoes and accessories, for children pre-K to fifth grade, leading up to its Spring Dance on April 3. Donations may be brought to the school office. Tomorrow, I Love Ya Students have been rehearsing vigorously for the school’s spring musical, Annie Jr., with performances on May 28 and 29. Khloe Thomas will star as Annie, Kemontae Chaplin as Mr. Warbucks, and Nijayah Ross as Ms. Hannigan. Music teacher Stephen Chubb is directing. A Heartwarming Valentine’s Parents and students showed their love for teachers by presenting them with roses on Valentine’s Day and distributing snacks and sweets during the month. And Capital Candy Jar supported the school by donating proceeds from a day of sweets sales to the PTO. Miner students and parents enjoy some sweets in front of the Capital Candy Jar at 15th and Constitution NE on the day the store donated a portion of sales to the school’s PTO.
