Today is the 1st day of Black History Month. The Miner community invites you to honor Black History Month by donating to the school a used or new book featuring Black characters or influential African American figures.
Help Miner receive 100 donated books by the end of February! Forward this your friends, families, and neighborhood listservs. Donors are encouraged to choose from one of these books: www.wishlistr.com/miner-pto-grants Please support local Black businesses and authors such as:
Drop off books in the school's front lobby or mail them directly to: Miner PTO 601 15th St NE Washington DC 20002 https://www.minerelementary.org/black-history-month-book-drive.html The Miner PTO wishes to thank the Maryland Avenue Chik-Fil-A (@chikfilanedc) and Peter Choi, the franchise owner, for the generous donation of food and drinks for our staff appreciation lunch in January. We are grateful for the support of our community, and we appreciate Mr. Choi's help in recognizing our staff for their tireless work!
Thank you all! On Thursday night the PTO and school hosted our second family engagement event of the year—the Winter Luau. Students danced the night away in the gym and enjoyed pizza and popcorn while taking a break from the dance floor. Everyone had a great time, and the night was a huge success.
However, there is no way the dance would have been possible without the help of some of our incredible teachers/staff and dedicated parents. First of all, huge thank you's go out to Mr. Faison for his amazing DJ skills, and to Jessica Burniske, Ms. Mears, Ms. Olazo, Ms. Poblete, and Ms. Turingan for all of the decorations that transformed the gym into a tropical paradise. Additionally, without the help of Ms. Wisnoski, Ms. Robinson, Ms. Poole, Dan Fitzgerald, John Muir, and David & Amy Treat, we wouldn’t have been able to pull off the event. And last, but certainly not least, thank you to everyone (and there are so many of you!) who stayed after the dance ended to help clean up. We are so grateful to our awesome Miner family for making events like this possible! Thank you, Julie Muir VP, Miner PTO Miner Elementary & the Miner PTO Invite our families to a Winter Dance Family Engagement Event Thursday, January 18 * 6:00 - 8:00 PM * In the Gym Theme: A Tropical Luau! It’s cold outside, so we hope you’ll join us for some great fun indoors!
Now that the holidays are over and a new year is upon us, a lot of families may be cleaning out the old to make room for the new. Depending on what you're getting rid of, the PTO would like to make a couple of requests, and also offer some tips.
1. Miner has a "treasure" chest of small toys that are used as prizes for the students. If you're one of those homes with children that quickly accumulate a variety of small toys and trinkets and want to get rid of some, please consider donating them. Just drop off any items at the front desk. If you'd like a receipt for tax purposes, just email us at [email protected]. 2. Planning has begun for Miner's Third Annual Spring Yard Sale! The school has once again offered space at the school for storage of donations until the sale occurs later this year (tentatively April 28). As you clean and organize for the new year, just bring any toys, games, clothes, household items, furniture, decor, or other items in good condition to the school at any time starting after we return from break. We are still working out final logistics for drop off of donations, so in the meantime, you can leave them in the Parent Resource Center (Room 143) just off the East Lobby. If you'd like a receipt for tax purposes, just email us at [email protected]. 3. Some used Apple devices in working condition may quality for a gift card when mailed back to Apple. See https://www.apple.com/recycling/ for more information. 4. For devices that are too old or no longer work, here are a couple of options:
5. As part of the PTO's Spring Yard Sale, we will accept dropped off e-waste and other household hazardous waste at Miner, after which we will transport it to Ft. Totten as a community service. See the above DPW link for accepted e-cycle items, and here for accepted household hazardous waste: https://dpw.dc.gov/node/466802 A few quick shout-outs to thank the Miner community for contributing to what was a pretty busy final week before the start of Winter Break: First, I’d like to thank the PTO’s vice president, Julie Muir, for leading the effort to purchase and wrap 25 toys and other gifts which were provided to Miner’s social workers to distribute to students who might not otherwise receive many gifts this Christmas. The PTO’s ability to do this was aided greatly by a generous donation from the H St. Community Development Corporation (http://www.hstreetcdc.org/). Thank you HSCDC for your support of Miner! Second, I’d like to echo the appreciation expressed by Jessica and Justin Burniske regarding the PTO’s holiday cookie drive. It was amazing to see so many incredible treats donated by parents so the staff could take home something sweet for the break. Lastly, I’d like to pass on a message from Ms. Mears and the Kindergarten team: “Thank you to all the families and staff for supporting the holiday shop! We sold out and raised $415. It was a wonderful experience for students to give to others. I am truly excited for all our kindergarteners!” Thank you again for being a part of our incredible Miner community! Have a restful Winter Break and we’ll see you in 2018!

![]() The PTO’s second annual Holiday Greenery & Bake sale was an incredible success! By selling nearly 200 trees and dozens of wreaths and garlands, we raised $4,000 to be used in the PTO’s efforts to directly support Miner’s students and teachers. The response from the community was overwhelming, and it was great to see so many neighbors and friends of Miner attend the sale. And of course we are pleased that so many Miner families were able to purchase their perfect Christmas tree, holiday greenery, and tasty treats from us! At the conclusion of the sale, the PTO donated a tree to the school, which has already been set up on the stage and festively decorated by students and staff (see photo at right). Lindsey Jones-Renaud and Mariana Jones, the co-chairs of the PTO’s Fundraising & Grants Committee, did an amazing job leading and coordinating this major undertaking. It is because of their tireless dedication to Miner that the sale was such a success. Thank you Lindsey and Mariana! The PTO would also like to extend its appreciation to all the Miner parents and staff who volunteered their time working during the sale and donating goodies for the bake sale! Parents who braved the cold to assist customers, haul trees, trim trunks and branches, and bundle and load into and onto cars include Hayden Aaronson, Heidi Altman & Scott Roehm, Lolly Axley & Marc Borbely, Andrew Curry, Shauna Eisenberg, Amber Harlow, Nick Heitger, John Muir, Terri Rupar, Matt & Sara Saxton, and Tiffany Stewart. Special thanks go out to Miner teachers and staff who were right in there with the parents: Principal Jackson, Ms. Cummings, Mr. Dante Daniel, Ms. Dorsey, Ms. G. Harris, and Ms. Kathryn Hunt Wisnoski. Thanks again everyone! The Miner community truly is amazing! Go Mighty Bears! Having a book fair is always a huge undertaking. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Jackson, Principal and Mr. Treat, PTO President for advertising the fair with families and friends. I would also like to thank everyone who came to our Book Fair. Thanks to our volunteers (Mrs. Davis, Art Teacher, Mary Bakota, Ann Taylor, Diane Reeves, John Muir, James Caparas, and Becky Shyovitz) who took time from their busy schedule the week before Thanksgiving to help decorate, setup, restock and rearrange items, and help our students to bargain shop. I know it was a lot of work, but you were incredible volunteers and I appreciate your assistance. Thanks for your patience, dedication, hard work, commitment, and energy. We couldn’t have done it without you!
Although we didn’t achieve our target goal ($4,190), we achieved $3,269.44 in total fair sales. Thanks again for your support and we look forward to seeing you at our spring book fair. Happy Holidays! Michelle "Shelley" Williams School Librarian Thank you all for your incredible generosity during the PTO's annual Thanksgiving Food Drive!! Thanks to you, we were able to stuff 24 grocery bags full of traditional Thanksgiving fixin's such as stuffing, sweet potatoes, green beans, cranberries, and many other items! Special appreciation goes out to Principal Jackson's Aunt Anne who baked homemade bread and cookies as an added treat. The PTO is also grateful to Insight Property Group LLC and their generous donation which allowed us to purchase turkeys to go with each bag.
This event wouldn't have been possible without the leadership of Julie Muir, PTO vice president. Others whose contributions made this event so successful include Dr. King, Ms. G. Harris, Ms. Coates, Derek and Billie Hodgson, Katy Thomas, and Brendan Whitsitt. Thank you all! It really is amazing how the Miner family steps up time and again to lend a hand to those in need. Your generosity will ensure that two dozen families will have a wonderful meal over which to give thanks. |
